Feedback Box: Marc Houle "Undercover EP" // etc.

This morning I received a promotional e-mail regarding Marc Houle's new Undercover EP, which contains material from his forthcoming album on Items & Things. First of all, I love getting those e-mails. Thanks Clare Dover, Nikki Wright-McNeill and Desy Balmer (Nice & Nasty / Dublin XPress.)

"I'm going undercover - keep me, undercover." Marc Houle's title track is quite literal with parallel climbing low bit bass and synth sextuplets, and the everpresent Roland toms (which I like, let's face it, no matter how many times I hear them.) Thanks to Beatport, I know that the track is A minor, as many dance tracks are I've noticed.

Tangent: Knowing the keys of your tracks does not necessarily mean you should mix in a familiar chord progression. A lot of great sets take spontaneous twists and turns. Yet, knowing keys can be helpful in that you learn more about the composition of what you're doing. Sure, you could try to mix in one key the whole time, but that would probably sound static. Plus, two tracks in the same key don't always jive! You still have to develop your ear (that is, if you're concerned with harmony and dissonance) and sense of timing. And it's definitely gratifying to blend two tracks together in a way that is harmonically and/or texturally complimentary.  The listeners, however many, always feel it.

Moving on...

Though "Triple E" showcases the live drums mentioned in the promo write-up, the Bruno Pronsato mix is the strongest track on the EP. The vocal in his remix of "Undercover" sounds more like the above possessed Lincoln with the glowing eyes. The texture and kick drum are developed further, making it more effective as a club track. Pronsato is a pro at the dry creepy vibes.

Sven Weisemann @ Make It New // Middlesex Lounge

secret agency

"He looks Svenish," said Andy.

Sven Weisemann, or who I assumed to be Sven Weisemann, leaned on a subwoofer waiting, the Middlesex Lounge's "Waldo" in black and white horizontal stripes.  And as it became midnight he still stood there, turning down drinks and adjusting his glasses, occasionally making approving faces at the track one of the residents played.

I leaned heavily against the concrete counter, my virgin margarita in one hand, in the spotlight.  It was past my witching hour, yet I was happy to be reunited with friends Andy and Josiah, and we stood there talking about music and pending island getaways.  We were in the perfect corner to observe, off to the side of the fray.

With quick reflexes, Sven improvised EQ patterns and punched out beats on the CDJ.  He closed his eyes and was in that other world.  Though he didn't seem to notice the crowd much, he kept us moving and marvelling.

Are you in the right class?

Well.

-shuffle, flush-

I dream during daily drudgery.

Thought collects in my nostrils;

Reason tangles my hair.

-stammer, chortle, fuss-

Take a seat. Take a seat,

You need to be heard,

The part of you unadvertised

By The Clamorous Times.

-scrape, furrow, knit, survive, sing-

We’ll tap into you like a great tree.

Your dried mud will crumble,

Then someone will come ‘round to vacuum

And it will be gone.

-soften, loosen, strengthen, lift-

Shift, and sigh. In wonderment, laugh.

Here at table I take — well,

Give me moment or more

To say some things strange but true.

When I hear music do you know what I do?

I know what you do, you dance.

Dubstep Uproar

???

Whenever I hear more than a few people complain about a particular musical genre or subgenre or style, I think:  "Really?  Music??"  When I hear a form of dance music derided, it makes me more inclined to go find examples that I like.  So, that's what I've done.  Here are some new dubstep tracks that I like:

As of yesterday I've resumed work on my track, this time with sample permissions.  I'm looking forward to finishing this!  And one day, I'll have some real equipment.  In the meantime, there's my Dell laptop, my Sony headphones, Audacity, 909 samples, borrowed voices and imagination.

Pedazos De South Padre

[written anywhere from 2006-2008 in the sky and on the ground]

July 15 / 5:45 am

The sunrise coats a warm orange onto the gray purple Atlantic.  There are only spotlights in the cabin and the first class curtains have not yet been drawn.  All the children are asleep.  The din is rushing air and mechanical operation.  Chaleco Salvavidas Debajo De Su Asiento.  Beverage announcements include margaritas.

6:45 am

Here's a simile from the in-flight movie: "...like a cruel mother who seduces you with roses and chocolates, and then leaves you by the side of the road like a dead raccoon."  I didn't eat my "Dave's Lil' Loafer" from the in-flight snack unit.  The label depicts someone fishing under a tree.  The product contains Propylene Glycol.  Perhaps that is what gives the loafer its lustre.

9:00 am

This is the second demonstration of the oxygen mask.  In Houston it's raining and the land is so flat there's no mystery to the storm.  Danielle, the stewardess, is sitting in the dark.  I see a stockinged leg and the square white tips of manicured fingernails that protrude from a shadow.  While waiting for takeoff I learn how to open the exit door.  DO NOT OPEN DOOR AFTER WATER LANDING.  If we would just get underway I wouldn't have to entertain as many heart-pumping futures.

1:30 pm

Driving towards the causeway to South Padre we pass giant yucca, agave, fields of cactus blooming yellow and dark purple.  The barrel cactus sits on the ground, large and rotund.  There is a small ranch house called "Little Graceland" with a miniature replica of the Graceland gates guarding the short driveway.  Inside lives a rawhide-skinned Vietnam vet who met Elvis during the war.  He has since siddled up to the TX 100 and transformed his residence into a shrine to the King, crowded with minor and significant memorabilia.  Each visitor to the house also listens to his musical tribute, a painfully awkward ballad he had pressed to vinyl.  Authentic craziness does not recognize fanaticism or obsession.

We also pass a roadside stand that sells produce, goats and large albino rabbits.  At the conclusion of the causeway is a photo-op entrance to the island.  A couple of vehicles, including an entirely airbrushed truck, pull off the road.  The passengers pull out their digital cameras.

3:00 pm

Neon lines the hem of Marilyn Monroe's dress.  D'Pizza serves Landshark Lager.  The salad is a plate of iceberg lettuce topped with one slice of onion, one slice of green pepper, and two slices of tomato.  Our waitress has long spindly legs and glasses that magnify her eyeballs.

4:00 pm

The Gulf undertow is strong.

The walls of the condo are plastered and painted silvery white and exposed aluminum ventilation pipes line the concrete ceiling.  Everything about the condo is dramatic.  I choose to sleep on the cream leather sectional in the living room.  Outside the penthouse door, the building is being renovated.  There's a toilet on the staircase and the rattan walls have been painted a putrid salmon.  Outside the elevators are bushels of fake flowers.

A number of glowing windows in the city at night

[written anywhere from 2006-2008]

A number of glowing windows in the city at night

Stream down upon me as I circle the block

So many inscriptions to read, so much unfinished business

Hours may pass, every sequined star refracted upon glass

Oh how many times I looked up and wanted throw the rock that would crack the sky

Everything that passes I ask is that you?  The plus and the minus, the equilibrium

Feedback Box: REKIDS010CD - Nina Kraviz debut

[This morning I received a promotional e-mail from Clare at Global Publicity - globalpublicity.co.uk - about Nina Kraviz's upcoming release on Rekids.]

Nina Kraviz has a great voice and there are some excellent vocal melodic lines in the promotional clip I listed to. However, the album sounds unfinished. My ears long to hear a thick electronic musical backdrop that really does her voice and songwriting skills justice. I realize that there is a minimal aesthetic going on here, yet I wonder.

http://soundcloud.com/rekids/rekids010cd-promo-nina-kraviz/s-sq9x1

The synth stylings of 9.15 in the sample really caught my ear. I thought, "Let's put a deep, chugging heavy beat behind this and it would really be a dancefloor killer." I have to be honest! This sounds to me like the framework for a great album.
At the end of the promo, I hear her sing "Pressssurrre." Well sometimes, I guess, it's important to tune out the pressure and do what one likes. If that's the case here, then great. The debut just sounds hurried, though. Sometimes it's better to back up and make the world wait, or collaborate like crazy for inspiration. It can't be easy if you're touring.

Anyway, the release date is set for February. And I think, "Really, do you want this to be just another okay new release?" Nina and Rekids would do well to invest more time in this project or take it back to the woodshed in the interim and add some layers and maybe basslines!

The Ghost Of Employment Past

[Written in 2006 on scrap pieces of paper, which I found today.]

The entirety of each morning is a haze: the fog that hovers over the roads, the company pond, with the company tire floating in it.  This is a time in my life that gives me pause, which is why I am always late for work.  I roll over, and from within the haze of sleep, silence the radio alarm.  I don't hit the snooze button; I press it gently.  Anyone with enough energy to hit a snooze button needs to get up.  Caffeinated voices and static saturate every other frequency of the spectrum.  The morning music lilts and croons; in the afternoon, you're supposed to shake it and hump someone's leg.

When I look at the data, then at the computer screen, then back at the data, the haze continues.  The woman at the other desk is Linda.  She has long straight hair and a grimace for a smile.  On her driver's license her hair is an eighties puffball, but the photo was taken two years ago.  "I got tired of spending an hour on it every morning," she said.

Every day she provides more evidence to confirm that her retired army husband is an ornery son of a bitch.  "I don't fix the spaghetti that way because he doesn't like it that way."  "My husband doesn't like going to the movies.  He gets mad when people talk.  So it's better for us to just not go, watch movies at home."

Their satellite beams in wholesome channels to their giant screen TV.  But Linda works because she doesn't want to be stuck at home with Johnny all day.  She works at the factory because it's something to do, and right around the corner from their house, but Johnny won't let her walk to work.

I push open the creaky door.  "Screee --"
"Well, look at you."
"Good morning," I say half-heartedly.  It's 7:05.
Her cough resounds in the silence created by my late arrival.  The clicking of keys overlaps into insect noise.

"Bless you (?)," she says.  Linda had never said that when I sneezed because she thinks I'm a heathen, probably - or because her father, a Vietnam and Korean War veteran, was extremely startled by sudden noises such as sneezing.

One day we were outside eating lunch at one of the picnic tables in the sun. "Where are you going for Easter?" she asked.
"Well, I don't know."
"Oh, you haven't found a place yet...?
"What can I say."  I was drunk last Easter.  When we were telling stories of that kind, I shared that information with Amanda and she laughed.  Linda would have said I'm out of control.  I did feel out of control at the time.

Feedback Box: Tony Lionni's "Higher Ground"

Yesterday I found a promo had been FATdropped into my e-mail inbox.  It was Tony Lionni's upcoming "Higher Ground EP" from Freerange Records.

This is what I wrote in the comment box:

"The Moomin Remix is a laid back, wandering track.  I can imagine myself having a heated moment with someone on the dancefloor to this, or cooking dinner (as I am now)."

Here's a December mix by Tony Lionni:

The Porcupine & The Cure For Cancer

Theoretical  daydreaming  and  connecting  the  dots

The porcupine is a volatile creature by nature:

"The North American porcupine is the only species that lives in the U.S. and Canada, and is the largest of all porcupines. A single animal may have 30,000 or more quills."  National Geographic

No, don't poke it.  Yet fear not:

"Quills are released by contact with them, or they may drop out when the porcupine shakes its body, but cannot be projected at attackers."  Wikipedia

"Because the sharp quills often penetrate their tree-climbing owner itself after an accidental fall, adaptation has coated the quills with antibiotic, so that they rarely engender infection."  Scientific American

We have something in common -- affinity for salt:

"Whatever salty hands have touched, from ax handles to discarded wrappings, becomes the target of their needful gnawing. Nowadays the most common attractor for the porcupine is plywood in unattended outbuildings. The curing compound used in plywood is sodium nitrate, so porcupines chew doggedly at wooden walls for that scant, unseen prize."

Moving on...

A cancer cell reminds me of a porcupine, with one exception -- affinity for salt:

"Sodium bicarbonate is safe, extremely inexpensive and unstoppably effective when it comes to cancer tissues. It’s an irresistible chemical, cyanide to cancer cells for it hits the cancer cells with a shock wave of alkalinity, which allows much more oxygen into the cancer cells than they can tolerate. Cancer cells cannot survive in the presence of high levels of oxygen."  IMVA

And here's a bizarre cancer/porcupine treatment connection -- Chinese medicine and "Porcupine Dates":

"The characteristics of Porcupine Dates are calculus growth like a rare “stone” shape like a “date”, that found in the stomach of a porcupine. When porcupine is ill or injured, porcupine will find the wild growth herbs in the forest to cure itself. As the virus is besieged this porcupine dates will grow as the healing progress this “dates shape stone” may form in the stomach. The size and the medical value is based on the duration of time, or it grows in bigger size by the age of the porcupine."
